Kaisermühlen#
Kaisermuehlen, part of Vienna´s 22nd district (until 1938 part of the 2nd district), situated between the Danube (along the Hubertusdamm and Kaisermuehlendamm) and the old Danube. First documented mention as "Hof- und Kaisermuehlen" in 1674; name goes back to the former imperial shipmills situated on one branch of the Danube. Originally it was a settlement of mill owners and tenants, raftsmen, bargees and fishermen in the riverside meadowlands. The regulation of the Danube (beginning in 1875) caused a sharp rise in economic building activity, and council estates like the Goethehof were built; Kaisermuehlen has bathing beaches Gaensehaeufel) and water sport facilities on the Old Danube; the Donaupark and the Vienna International Centre (1979) are also in Kaisermuehlen.
