Kanusport#
Canoeing, sport for both sexes, comprises canoe racing (shallow water), canoe slalom, and canoe touring, as well as wild water sport and alpine wild water sport. The boats used are kayaks, Canadian canoes, or foldboats (also: faltboat), with single or double-bladed paddles. Canoeing developed at the end of the 19th century from Rowing; the Austrian Canoe Association was established in 1922. Austria's greatest success in canoeing occurred when G. Hradetzky, A. Dorfner, and A. Kainz won three gold medals in the 1936 Olympics. The Austrian Canoe Association (Oesterreichische Kanuverband, OeKV) comprises 52 clubs with a total of 4521 members (as of 1993).
