Karl, Prince of Lorraine and Bar, b. Luneville (France), Dec. 12, 1712, d.  Tervuren Castle near Brussels (Belgium), July 4, 1780, brother of Emperor Franz I and brother-in-law of Maria Theresia, grandson of Karl V of Lorraine. From 1736 in the imperial army, 1742 commander-in-chief in Bohemia, until 1757 general, from 1744 (initially with his wife Archduchess Maria Anna) governor of the Netherlands. First holder of the military Order of Maria Theresia, 1761 Grand Master of the Teutonic Order.>
