Karner, Stefan#
Karner, Stefan, b. St. Jakob bei Voelkermarkt, Carinthia, Dec. 18, 1952, historian. Studied history and Slavic languages and literature at the University of Graz, where he became a teaching assistant in 1977 and was appointed professor in 1993. Since that year also head of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Research on War Consequences (Ludwig-Boltzmann-Institut fuer Kriegsfolgen-Forschung) in Graz and Vienna, since 1995 Austrian representative in the Council of Europe's European Commission against Racism and Intolerance and since 1997 Austrian representative (with P. Pelinka) in the EU's European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia in Vienna. Among his research interests are the history of National Socialism and the fate of Austrian prisoners of war as reflected in Soviet archives.
