Kassner, Rudolf#
b. Velke Pavlovice, Czech Republic (then Gross-Pawlowitz), Sept. 11, 1873, d. Sierre (Switzerland), April 1, 1959, cultural philosopher, writer, essayist. Since the 1st year of his life partly paralysed; 1938-1945 forbidden to publish any of his writings. In his complex work he tried to interpret the characteristics of living forms physiognomically as an expression of the mind. tried repeatedly to analyse and define the Austrian character. From 1945 K. lived in Switzerland. Awarded the Swiss G. Keller Prize in 1949, the Grand Austrian State Prize in 1953, the Schiller Prize in 1955 and the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art in 1957.
