Kauffmann, Angelika#

Kauffmann, Angelika, b. Chur (Switzerland), Oct. 30, 1741, d. Rome (Italy), Jan. 5, 1807, painter, daughter and pupil of the Vorarlberg painter Joseph Johann K. from Schwarzenberg (family home and A. K. documentation in the museum of local history and culture), further studies in Lombardy, from 1763 stayed in the most important European art centres, 1766-1781 in London, where she became a member of the Royal Academy in 1768. From 1782 permanent residence in Rome, where she maintained close contact with Goethe, Herder, Winckelmann and others. Especially famous for her paintings influenced by English portrait paintings and for her works based on classical motifs. Her works, which also included altar paintings and frescos, combined rococo elements with classicist formal principles.
