Kellergasse#

Kellergasse (literally: cellar alleys or streets) typical form of settlement in the Austrian wine-growing regions (common in the Weinviertel and in some parts of the Burgenland): the picturesque houses of the Kellergassen are not part of the villages but were mostly built nearby, where the soil conditions and the hillside ("Kellerberg") were suitable. In areas with loess soil the Kellergassen are mostly steep defiles where only the entrances of the cellars can be seen. The most famous Austrian Kellergassen are in the Weinviertel (Falkenstein, Roeschitz, Wartberg, Unterstinkenbrunn, Kronberg, Poysdorf, Ameis, Wildenduernbach, Mannersdorf an der March), on the Wagram (Fels, Feuersbrunn), in the wine-growing region of Carnuntum (Hoeflein) and in the Burgenland (Breitenbrunn, Heiligenbrunn).
