Kisch, Egon Erwin#

Kisch, Egon Erwin, b. Prague (Czech Republic), April 29, 1885, d. Prague (Czech Republic), March 31, 1948, journalist and author of critical travel and social reports, a genre which he helped develop. At the beginning of his career he worked as local reporter for the "Bohemia" in Prague and after the disclosure of the espionage affair concerning Colonel A. Redl in 1913 he turned to political journalism. After his participation in World War I K. became a star reporter for socialist newspapers in Berlin (1921-1933). Made extensive tours through Europe, Africa, the USA and China, which were the subject of his famous travel reports (e.g. "Der rasende Reporter", 1924). In 1933 arrested by the National Socialists, released after the intervention of the Czechoslovak government, participated in the Spanish Civil War in 1937/38, went to Mexico and stayed there until the end of World War II. In 1946 returned to Prague.
