Klaus, Josef#

Klaus, Josef, b. Mauthen (Carinthia), Aug. 15, 1910, d. Vienna, July 25, 2001, law graduate and politician (OeVP, Austrian People's Party). 1949-1961 Landeshauptmann of Salzburg, 1952-1964 chairman of the OeVP of Salzburg, 1962-1963 and 1966-1970 member of the Nationalrat, 1960-1963 deputy chairman of the OeVP and 1963-1970 chairman of the OeVP, 1961-1963 Federal Minister of Finance, 1964-1966 Federal Chancellor of the OeVP-SPOe coalition and 1966-1970 Federal Chancellor of the OeVP government. K. is regarded as the "reform chancellor" of the period after World War II. In his functions as Landeshauptmann and chancellor he criticised distribution of offices according to the proportion of votes of the respective parties and aimed at political objectivisation. He appointed above all experts of the respective fields for office in the Federal Government and supported the dialogue between science and politics. K. also supported negotiations for an association agreement with the EEC, advocated European Unity including Central and Eastern Europe and pursued a policy of detente concerning the question of South Tyrol.
