b. Vienna, March 9, 1923, physicist, Nobel Prize for Chemistry 1998 (with John Pople) for his work in the field of theoretical solid-state chemistry and physics. Fled to Britain in 1939 to escape from National Socialism, then emigrated to Canada, studied mathematics and physics at the University of Toronto and Harvard University, USA, where he embarked on his scientific career in 1948; since 1991 Professor of Physics at the University of Santa Barbara, California. Work in the field of theoretical solid-state chemistry and physics (density-functional theory); laid the foundations for important computer-assisted calculation methods. Several theories and methods bear his name (Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method, Hohenberg-Kohn theorem, Kohn-Sham equations etc.). More than 200 publications.
