Kollek, Teddy#

Kollek, Teddy, b. Vienna, May 27, 1911, politician. joined the Zionistic youth organisation T´khelet-Lavan and the He-Halutz organisation while still young. 1934 his family emigrated to Palestine. 1939 and 1940 succeeded in persuading A. Eichmann to send 3,000 young internees in concentration camps to Palestine. Organised the Jewish underground in Central and Eastern Europe in 1942; Head of the US Department of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs; for 2 years Israeli Ambassador to the USA, then Director-General of the Prime Minister´s Office, 1965-1993 Mayor of Jerusalem.
