Kreß, Wilhelm#
Kress, Wilhelm, b. St. Petersburg (Russia), July 29, 1836, d. Vienna, Feb. 24, 1913, flight pioneer, engineer. Settled in Vienna in 1873, where he was the first to fly a freely suspended kite-model (1877); attempted the first take-off with a powered plane from the Tullnerbach reservoir (1901), but failed because the engine was too heavy. 2 years later the Wright brothers in the USA succeeded in making the first powered flight. Around 1900 invented a joy stick for combination control.
