Kriegerdenkmäler#
War Memorials, monuments commemorating soldiers killed in action, either as former residents of the community or on a nearby battlefield, erected in churches or public places. In the 19th century war memorials were erected at Aspern (1858) and on Bergisel mountain near Innsbruck and various other places. After the First and Second World Wars memorials were put up in virtually all major communities. In some cases chapels or historic buildings were converted into memorials (Aeusseres Burgtor in Vienna, 1933/34). In 1945 the Soviet Army erected a memorial on Schwarzenbergplatz square in Vienna in honour of its soldiers killed in action.
