Kurz, Josef Felix von genannt Bernardon#

Kurz, Josef Felix von (nicknamed Bernardon), b. Vienna, Feb. 22, 1715, d. Vienna, Feb. 2, 1784, actor, librettist. From 1737 actor at the Vienna Kaerntnertortheater, played the comic figures of Viennese popular theatre ("Bernardon" and "Hanswurst") in numerous extempore comedies; considered one of the main representatives of Austrian popular baroque theatre together with J. A. Stranitzky and G. Prehauser. Wrote the librettos of over 300 singspiels, in which he anticipated the parodistic note of plays by J. Nestroy. 1751 wrote the libretto of the singspiel "Der krumme Teufel" by J. Haydn (after a novel by A. R. Lesage). K. also worked in Frankfurt am Main, Dresden, Prague and Warsaw (1772-1782 theatre manager).
