La Roche, Karl Ritter von#
La Roche, Karl Ritter* von (from 1873), b. Berlin (Germany), Oct. 12, 1794, d. Vienna, March 11, 1884, actor and singer. Studied veterinary medicine, then became an actor; debut in Dresden (1811). Played complex characters in Lemberg (1816) and in Koenigsberg (1819-1823), at the Hoftheater in Weimar (1823-1833), where J. W. von Goethe rehearsed "Mephisto" with him (1829). Also an opera singer (e.g. in "Don Giovanni" and "Der Freischuetz"). 1832 guest performance at the Vienna Burgtheater, 1833 appointed life member (parts: Franz Moor, King Philipp, Jago, Mephisto, Tartuffe, Shylock, village judge Adam). 1841-1874 also worked at the Burgtheater as a director; tours to all big cities of the monarchy and Germany.
