Landes- und Stadttheater#
Provincial and Municipal Theatres (Landestheater and Stadttheater), exist in all Austrian provinces except Vienna and Burgenland, the latter having a special status with its cultural centres. Landestheater and Stadttheater are theatres with a large repertoire (opera, operetta, musical, plays from classic to modern and experimental theatre). The companies usually perform not only in the capitals but also in other towns and smaller places of the respective province.
Lower Austria: Stadttheater St. Poelten (about 220 performances
per season), Stadttheater Baden (about 160 performances per season),
Stadttheater Wiener Neustadt (one of the oldest theatres in Austria,
opened in 1794, guest performances only, about 70 performances per
season); Styria: Vereinigte Buehnen Graz (opera house, theatre,
experimental theatre and rehearsal stage, about 550 performances per
season); Upper Austria: Landestheater Linz with Kammerspiele, a studio
theatre where society plays are performed, and a theatre in the cellar
of Ursulinenhof (about 700 performances per season, outstanding work
with young people); Salzburg: Landestheater Salzburg (about 400
performances per season; larger productions are performed in the
Kleines and Grosses Festspielhaus, the small and big festival theatre,
and in the Felsenreitschule, international guest performances); Tyrol:
Landestheater in Innsbruck (large theatre hall and Kammerspiele,
studio theatre where society plays are performed, about 450
performances per season, regular guest performances in South Tyrol);
Vorarlberg: theatre of Vorarlberg, the main theatre is the Theater am
Kornmarkt in Bregenz, guest performances by the company in southern
Germany and in Switzerland; since 1972 yearly production for the
Bregenz Festival); Carinthia: Stadttheater Klagenfurt (about 300
performances per season). Burgenland: cultural centres in Eisenstadt,
Mattersburg, Oberschuetzen, Guessing and Jennersdorf (concept for
theatres emerged in 1977; regular guest performances by the Federal
Theatres, the Vienna Volkstheater, the Vereinigte Buehnen Graz and
other touring theatres).
