Lassnig, Maria#

b. Kappel im Krappfeld (Carinthia), Sept. 8, 1919, painter and graphic artist. Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under A. P. Guetersloh. 1951-1961 lived in Vienna and devoted herself to numerous different styles, from realism and surrealism to abstract art. 1961-1980 in Paris and New York, since 1970 active in the field of animated cartoons, from 1980 instructor (of painting and animated cartoons) at the Hochschule fuer angewandte Kunst (now University of Applied Arts) in Vienna. Her work encompasses a great variety of techniques and mediums, but self-portraits as well as portraits and still-lifes occupy a central position (Art as an expression of perception of the body). Awarded the Grand Austrian State Prize in 1988 and the Oskar Kokoschka Prize in 1998.
