Leogang#
Leogang, province of Salzburg, municipality in the district of Zell am See, alt. 788 m, pop. 3,034 (1981: 2,725), area 90.24 km2, bi-seasonal tourist resort (371,544 overnight stays) on Leogang River, at the southern foot of the Leogang Mountains. - In the Schwarzleo Valley copper was mined from the 12th century, from the 15th century until 1825 silver, quicksilver, lead, nickel, cobalt and magnesite. Show-mines: Daniel and Barbara tunnels, mining trail, various mineral finds. Mining museum at Huetten (former miners' settlement, miner´s chapel, 1770, with "mining" altar, one of 3 in Europe). Baroque parish church (1754) with Gothic tower, nave and tower encircled by iron chain, ceiling frescos (1755), high altar (1754), Baroque pulpit, baptismal font (16th century); centre of town in uniform style. In the upper Ullach valley Birnbachloch (rock cave with subterranean lake), nature and history trail.
