Leopold V., Habsburger, geb. 1586#

b. Graz (Styria), Oct. 9, 1586, d. Schwaz (Tyrol), Sept. 13, 1632, Habsburg, Archduke of Austria, son of Archduke Karl II, brother of Emperor Ferdinand II, father of Ferdinand Karl von Tirol; Bishop of Passau and Strasbourg (until 1625), ruler of Tyrol. Became Bishop in 1598 - when only a child, although not ordained. From 1609 recruited mercenaries whom he used in the Giulian inheritance dispute against Maximilian III in Tyrol and in 1611 for Rudolf II. in Bohemia. 1619 became governor of Tyrol and the south western dominions (now Vorarlberg and S.W. Germany), where he achieved the status of a prince 1623-1630. Had an opera house Dogana) and the Jesuit church built in Innsbruck and wanted to introduce absolutism. Fought for the Veltlin region and 1632 defended Tyrol against Sweden. Together with his wife Claudia of Medici founded a Habsburg family line that existed up to 1665.
