b. Novy Jičín (Czech Republic), June 17, 1909, d. Vienna, July 19, 1993 d. July 19, 1993, Vienna, Kammerschauspieler; husband of M. Rohs. 1931 came to the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna to train under M. Reinhardt, from 1933 at the Burgtheater (1969 honorary member, 1981 doyen). In around 8,000 performances played 260 parts, from the youthful classic hero to mature character roles (including Romeo, Goetz von Berlichingen, Marquis Posa, Mortimer). From 1949 also played at the Volksoper (Petrucchio in "Kiss me Kate" in 1956; honorary member). Also performed at the Salzburg Festival and taught at the Reinhardt Seminar drama school for 30 years; active in films and TV productions.
