Lindinger, Werner#
Lindinger, Werner, b. Brixlegg (Tirol), Jan. 25, 1944, d. Mauna Loa (Hawaii, USA), Feb. 16, 2001 (in an accident which occurred while erecting a mass spectrometer), physicist. Studied in Innsbruck and the USA; pursued his scientific career in Innsbruck; 1987-1993 head of the newly founded Institute for Ion Physics of the University of Innsbruck. Made groundbreaking discoveries in the field of ion molecule reactions and developed specific applications of his research: 1985 applied for a patent for a procedure for measuring air pollution; 1995 invented the proton transfer reaction mass spectrometer (PTR-MS), which is used for examining air currents in climatology. 1997 awarded the Erwin Schroedinger Prize of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
