b. Graz (Styria), April 30, 1896, d. Graz, Sept. 10, 1996, engineer and manufacturer; father of Helmut List. Studied from 1914 to1920 at the University of Technology in Graz, 1926 to1932 in China, 1932 to 1941 professor in Graz and in Dresden until 1945. 1948 founded what is now the AVL-LIST GmbH for the construction and development of diesel, petrol and gas engines and electronic measuring instruments for combustion engines. Awarded the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art in 1981.
