Lobkowitz, Hochadelsgeschlecht#
Lobkowitz; family of the higher nobility, originally from Bohemia; split into several branches. While some members of the family were expropriated in Bohemia after 1620 in the Thirty Years' War, others allied themselves to the Habsburgs. Zdenko Adalbert was made an imperial prince in 1624; other family members were made imperial counts in 1635 and 1670. Several members of the L. family made a name for themselves in politics and science. Among the most prominent members of the family were Prince Joseph Franz Lobkowitz and Prince Wenzel Eusebius Lobkowitz. The L. palace in Vienna was built from 1689-1694 by G.P. Tencala for Count Philipp Siegmund Dietrichstein (the portal was probably by Fischer von Erlach). The fresco on the ceiling of the main hall is an allegory of the arts by J. van Schuppen. Prince Ferdinand Philipp L. bought the palace in 1754. Until 1909, it housed the French embassy, after 1918 the Czech legation, then the French Cultural Institute; since 1991, the palace has housed the Oesterreichisches Theatermuseum.
