Loferer und Leoganger Steinberge#
Lofer and Leogang Mountains (Loferer and Leoganger Steinberge), 2 isolated massifs of the Salzburg Limestone Alps, at the border of Salzburg and Tirol, west of the river Saalach, separated from each other by Roemersattel pass (alt. 1,202 m). The highest elevation in the Lofer mountains is the Grosses Ochsenhorn (alt. 2,511 m), in the Leogang mountains the Birnhorn (alt. 2,634 m). The Leogang mountains are separated from the Kitzbuehel Alps by the Leogangtal valley and from Steinernes Meer Mountains by narrows of the Saalachtal valley. Schmidt-Zabierow mountain refuge (alt. 1,963 m) in the Lofer mountains; Passauer mountain refuge (alt. 2,057 m) in the Leogang mountains. Lamprechtsofen cave (Leogang mountains), 14,657 m long and 1,005 m deep. Vorderkaserklamm (narrow gorge north-east of Roemersattel) and Teufelsklamm (narrow gorge in Lofer mountains). Hochfilzen army training area in the west of the Leogang mountains.
