Lorant, Stefan#
Lorant, Stefan, b. Budapest (Hungary), Feb. 22, 1901, d. USA, Nov. 14, 1997, photographer, journalist. In the 1920s cameraman in Vienna and Berlin; from 1928 editor-in-chief of the weekly magazine "Muenchner Illustrierte Presse". 1933 arrested by the National Socialists; emigrated via Hungary and Paris to London, where he established two magazines; 1940 emigrated to the USA. His diary "I Was Hitler´s Prisoner" (1935; Ich war Hitlers Gefangener, 1985) brought him international recognition. In the USA, L. devoted his energies mainly to documentary photography; he is considered a pioneer of modern photographic journalism.
