b. Ružomberok, Slovakia (then Rosenberg), June 26, 1904, d. Hollywood (USA), March 23, 1964, (film) actor. First engagements in Vienna, Zurich and Wroclaw (then Breslau). 1929 to 1933 in Berlin (plays by B. Brecht, F. Wedekind, K. Kraus, G. Buechner, Oe. von Horváth). 1932 he made his breakthrough in Lang's film "M"; his part as a sex criminal brought him almost exclusively negative character roles. 1933 he filmed in England with A. Hitchcock ("The man who knew too much", 1935), 1935 went to Hollywood, where he played the part of Raskolnikow in J. von Sternberg's "Crime and Punishment" (1935) and with H. Bogart in "Casablanca" (1942, directed by M. Curtiz). This was followed by the "Mr. Moto" detective series starting in 1937, "Arsenic and Old Lace" (1944) and "Silk stockings" (1957).
