Lotterien Ges.m.b.H., Oesterreichische (Austrian Lotteries Company), founded in 1986 as "Austrian Lotto Toto Ges. m. b. H." to introduce the "6 out of 45" lottery in 1986 and to take over the football pools ("Toto") from the Austrian gambling monopoly administration (Oesterreichische Gluecksspielmonopolverwaltung), in order to profitably make use of the existing potential in the gambling sector and prevent the drain of cash abroad. In 1998 the Oesterreichische Lotterien GmbH comprised the following games: "6 out of 45 lottery, Toto and betting on goals, the lottery "1 - 90", Joker, instant lottery (break-open ticket), scratch tickets, the class lottery and electronic lotteries with the games "Treasure Island" and "Penalty". In 1997 turnover amounted to 14.6 billion ATS and taxes amounting to 5 billion ATS were paid to revenue authorities.
