Lunz am See#
Lunz am See, Lower Austria, market town in the district of Scheibbs, alt. 601 m, pop. 2,154, area 101.42 km2, bathing resort at the north-west shore of Lake Lunzer See, (67,236 over-night stays). - Lunz am See Biological Station, Department of Apiculture of the Hoehere Bildungslehranstalt (secondary school) for wine and fruit growing, provincial youth centre of Lower Austria, monitoring centre of the second Vienna spring water supply system, Lunz-Kasten power station (private). Various businesses, commuter town; formerly the residence of Hammerherren (owners of metal-working shops and forges in the 17th and 18th centuries). - Late Gothic parish church with two naves, rebuilt around 1503, tower with Baroque helm roof (1753), Madonna in Majesty with Child (15th century, damaged by Turkish scimitar in 1529); former Hammerherren house (Amonhaus) with sgrafitto paintings (around 1551), now the museum of local history and culture (Palaeolithic finds, Herdengel Cave, neo-Baroque Seehof Palace, formerly monastery of Gaming.
