Lurgrotte#
Lurgrotte Cave, Styria, show cave (stalactite cavern and water cave) at the Peggauer cliff in the highland around Graz. The Lurbach stream flows through the 5 km long cave (longest natural subterranean passageway in Austria) with a fall of 220 m. In the illuminated cave: domes, caves, "Knight´s Armour", "Giant Curtain", "Group of Pines", "Palm", numerous dripstone formations and the subterranean lake, Zierhutsee. The "Prince" is a giant inactive stalactite of about 3 t weight and 3.7 m length; prehistoric finds. One of the biggest and most beautiful caverns of Europe, discovered in 1894, its total length was explored for the first time in 1935. Middle section has been blocked up since an inrush of water carrying debris in the mid 1970s. Since then only accessible from Semriach or Peggau.
