Lurnfeld, Markt#
Lurnfeld, Carinthia, municipality in the district of Spittal, alt. 557 m, pop. 3,978, area 75.57 km2, municipality since 1973, in the Lurnfeld basin, north-west of Spittal an der Drau, with cadastral districts Moellbruecke I- III, Pusarnitz and Obergottesfeld. - Equipment yard of the regional office for torrent and avalanche control, Drauhofen agricultural school, girls´ hostel (Society of Carinthian Social Initiatives), nearby run-of-river power station Malta Unterstufe (built in 1977, 41 MW); forge for ornamental ironwork, timber mill, cultivation of field mushrooms, interior decorating, summer tourism (51,539 overnight stays). - During the Roman period "vallis Lurna", first documented mention in 891 as "Liburnia". In Moellbruecke, (documented mention in 1253, "Moelnprukke") late Gothic fortified church (15th century), winged altarpiece (1510), carved figures, side altars and pulpit in late Baroque style (around 1770), crucifix (around 1500) and choir stall (1512); late Gothic-Baroque subsidiary church of St. Magdalena am Lurnfeld; in Obergottesfeld Romanesque Ruprechtskirche church (documented mention in 1166) with Gothic frescoes (15th century) and Late Gothic winged altarpiece (around 1520); pilgrimage church of Maria Hohenburg, former chapel of castle Hohenburg (ruin) rebuilt in 1706; parish church in Pusarnitz, late Gothic building modified in Baroque style; ruins of Feldsberg Castle from the 12th and 13th centuries.
