Luxemburg#
Luxembourg, territory of the counts of the same name, which held the German royalty from 1308. In 1310 the Luxembourg dynasty acquired the kingdom of Bohemia through marriage, whereby the estate of Luxemborg was relegated to secondary status (in 1354 elevation to duchy). In 1441/43 it was purchased by Duke Philipp the Good of Burgundy, from 1477 it belonged to the House of Austria, in 1555 it became a possession of the Spanish Habsburgs but continued to be part of the Holy Roman Empire as a member of the "Burgundian Circle". In 1659 the southern part came under the rule of France, while Austria received the bigger share after the Spanish War of Succession in 1714. After the Congress of Vienna, Luxembourg was given the status of Grand Duchy and became a member of the German Confederation; in 1866, after the dissolution of the German Confederation, it became independent.
