Mahler-Werfel, Alma Maria geborene Schindler#

Mahler-Werfel, Alma Maria (nee Schindler), b. Vienna, Aug. 31, 1879, d. New York (USA), Dec. 11, 1964, buried in Grinzing, Vienna, writer and composer. Daughter of the painter E. J. Schindler; from 1902 wife of G. Mahler, mother of Anna Mahler. Guided by her teacher A. von Zemlinsky she wrote various compositions, 2 volumes of songs are still extant. After Mahler's death (1911) M.-W. had a love affair with the painter O. Kokoschka. In 1915 she married the architect W. Gropius. After her divorce she married the writer F. Werfelin 1929 and in 1938 emigrated with him first to France and then, in 1940, to the USA. In the years between the wars her salon in Vienna had been a meeting place for many artists and intellectuals.
