Malta, Fluss#
Malta, River, Carinthia, north-western tributary of the River Lieser, 36 km long; the river rises south-east of the Koelnbrein reservoir (east of the Ankogel Mountains) and empties into the River Lieser at the town of Gmuend (alt. 741 m). From Koschach (part of the municipality of Malta), the surrounding region of which is called Brandstatt, the mountain valley (predominantly made up of alpine meadowlands and mountain huts) opens out into more cultivable land studded with settlements. The village of Malta (alt. 843 m), which is situated in the lower reaches of the river, forms the centre of the valley. To the north of the town of Gmuend, where the Malta Valley joins the Katschtal Valley (River Lieser), the flow rate of the River Malta averages 3,8 m3/sec.
