Maria Alm am Steinernen Meer, province of Salzburg, municipality in the district of Zell am See, alt. 802 m, pop. 1,968, area 125.39 km2, bi-seasonal tourist resort (700,188 overnight stays). Old place of pilgrimage east of the market town of Saalfelden; situated in a valley bordered by the Steinernes Meer plateau to the north, by the Hundsstein Mountain (alt. 2,117 m) to the south and the Hochkoenig Mountain (alt. 2,941 m) to the east. - Recreational facilities, federal school of physical education at Hintermoos. - Late Gothic church with naves of equal height (built around 1500, adapted in Baroque style in the 18th century), west tower of 83 m in height (highest church tower in the province of Salzburg), high altar (1753) with a Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary carrying the Infant Jesus (1470-1480), frescoes (1757) painted by C. A. Mayr, 17th century side altar with miraculous altar painting of the Virgin Mary, Baroque processional statue of the Virgin Mary kept in a wall-shrine; cemetery with 16th century gravestones, Neo-Gothic Palestine Chapel (1872, founded by a pilgrim after he had returned from a pilgrimage to Palestine, on which he had been healed from a serious disease), Grahsteg Chapel (late 17th century); old farm houses (16th and 17th centuries) typical of the region ("Paarhof", consisting of two buildings parallel to each other, one is the farm building, the other serves as residential building and storehouse); every August pilgrimage in the honour of St. Bartholomew.
