Maria-Enzersdorf am Gebirge#
Maria-Enzersdorf am Gebirge, Lower Austria, market town in the district of Moedling, alt. 225 m, pop. 8,594, area 5.36 km2, situated to the south of Vienna. A former place of pilgrimage and vine-growing, the market town has begun to concentrate its economic activities on the service sector. Between 1960 and 1976 the modern part of Maria Enzersdorf am Gebirge, the "Suedstadt", was added to the old centre. - Unit of the Lower Austrian provincial government (project team concerned with regional development), provincial school of physical education, including the "Suedstadt" sports club and intensive training unit, as well as a medical care unit and consultation centre for sportsmen, Federal Office of Public Works, Lower Austrian Environmental Protection Agency, Austrian Service for Development Cooperation (OeED), Franciscan monastery and convent of the Poor Clares, Missionary training centre St. Gabriel (belongs to the Societas Verbi Divini; Neo-Romanesque building dating from 1913, museum of missionary work) with printing office; education centre, including a state school of secondary education for sportsmen and women (Bundesoberrealgymnasium fuer Leistungssportler), and a training college for telecommunication engineers maintained by the Austrian postal service, Maria-Enzersdorf Festival (at Liechtenstein Castle). In 1992, 4,002 employees66 % of which worked in the service sector. He Lower Austrian Energy Supply Works (EVN) is a major employer. Industry: engineering works, pharmaceutical industry and car companies. - Franciscan parish church (built in 1632), hall church tower with an outstanding façade (1787), side altars and pulpit created around 1760, transept and chancel dating from 1906, peaceful and beautifully laid out cemetery; Franciscan monastery built after 1600. Hunyadi Palace, Late Baroque three-winged building, redesigned by J. Patuzzi in 1766 (now centre for cultural events). Small palace ("Schloesschen auf der Weide"), from 1714-1716, with frescoes by J. G. Schmidt (1730); Pfandl Fountain; small Baroque shrine shaped like a temple set up along the road which was used by pilgrims on their way from Vienna to Mariazell. Liechtenstein Castle is situated just outside the town (ruins, 1873, Nestroy Festival. The EVN Centre (built in 1963) provides a venue for public events (G. Peichl, 1993).
