Marriot, Emilie eigentlich E. Mataja, auch Emil Marriot#
Marriot, Emilie (real name: E. Mataja, also Emil M.), b. Vienna, Nov. 20, 1855, d. Vienna, May 5, 1938, narrative author and dramatist. Supported by P. Heyse and L. von Sacher-Masoch, worked inter alia for the newspaper "Wiener Allgemeine Zeitung"; member of the Iduna (1891). Her realistic novels and stories about Viennese life are characterized by social commitment; deals with the social problems of her time, esp. the situation of women ("Moderne Menschen" 1893; "Anstaendige Frauen", 1906), but her works are flawed by cultural pessimism.
