Martin von Tours, Heiliger#
b. Savaria, Hungary (then Steinamanger, Szombathely), around 316, d. Candes-Saint-Martin, Indre-et-Loire (France), Nov. 8, 397, Bishop of Tours. In Austria patron of many old churches, esp. during the reign of the Carolingians, patron saint of the province of Burgenland. Since his feast day ( Martini) was the day on which rental payments were due and also marked the beginning of winter, numerous popular customs are celebrated on this day.
