Matzen-Raggendorf#
Matzen-Raggendorf, Lower Austria, market town in the district of Gaenserndorf, alt. 189 m, pop. 2,501, area 35.54 km2, situated in the southern part of the Weinviertel region near the Marchfeld plain. - Youth centre maintained by the Lower Austrian provincial government, sports centre, ice rink; oil production (largest Central European oilfield extending from Matzen-Raggendorf to the municipalities of Prottes, Schoenkirchen-Reyersdorf, Bockfliess and Auersthal, exploited by the OMV group, Austria´s biggest chemical and petroleum group), viticulture. - First documented mention in 1194. Parish church (1958/59) with a south tower that was preserved from an earlier Gothic/Baroque church; Matzen-Raggendorf Palace (first documented mention in 1194), was altered in the 17th century and in 1827, heavily damaged in 1945, rebuilt between 1963 and 1965, today the rooms of the palace are open to the public.
