Mauer bei Melk#
Mauer bei Melk, Lower Austria, village in the district of Melk, alt. 250 m, situated east of the town of Melk; cadastral district of the market town of Dunkelsteinerwald. - Gothic parish church, the nave of which was altered in Baroque style in 1737, sacrament house (1506), high altar (1735). The finely carved limewood winged altar, which was created around 1520, constitutes one of the most outstanding Late Gothic works of art of Lower Austria. The central piece depicts the Virgin with Child, God the Father and the Holy Spirit surrounded by saints and souls in Purgatory awaiting the grace of God. The wings depict four scenes from the life of the Virgin Meister des Altars von Mauer bei Melk.
