Mautern in der Steiermark, Styria, market town in the district of Leoben, alt. 712 m, pop. 2,223, area 108.51 km2, centre of Liesing Valley situated on the foothills of Reiting Mountain. - Vocational school of agriculture (landwirtschaftliche Fachschule) at St. Martin, game reserve (extending over an area of approx. 500,000 m2), power supply centre (private); production of hollow bricks, steel processing, construction of porches, production of beverages, packaging company, timber trade. - Gothic parish church (first documented mention in 1187), late 15th century frescoes on the choir walls, impressive high altar (around 1675-1680), tabernacle ornamented with reliefs by J. T. Stammel; monastery church (former Franciscan monastery, Redemptorist monastery from 1827 to 1972), built between 1669 and 1675, high altar (1679-1680), choir decorated with statues (around 1740) by J. T. Stammel; Ehrnau Palace. The old buildings (originally built in the style of the 16th and 17th centuries) of the market town have been well preserved.
