Mechitaristen#
Mechitarists, congregation, branch of a Catholic order founded by the Armenian monk Mechitar (Mekhitar) in Constantinople in 1701, originally based on the oriental Antonine Rule, since 1711 on the Rule of St. Benedict; first came to Vienna in 1810 (monastery and church in the 7th district of Vienna, built in 1873/74). The order promotes the study of oriental languages, possesses valuable manuscripts and pursues scholarly studies of Armenian literature. It has its own printing shop and publishes a periodical, "Handes Amsorya" (Journal of Armenian Philology). Its Abbot General is currently P. Gregorios Manian.
