Meister Michael Michael Knab #

Meister Michael (Michael Knab?), b. around 1340/50, d. after 1399, master builder. Worked at the end of the 14th century for Duke Albrecht III; until about 1395 in charge of the building of St. Stephen´s. In 1375 built the "Spinnerin am Kreuz" in Vienna (1451/52 modified by H. Puchspaum) and 1382-1384 the "Spinnerin am Kreuz " in Wiener Neustadt endowed by Wolfart von Schwarzensee. M. M. built the former "Wasserburg" castle in Laxenburg for Duke Albrecht III (Lower Austria, today "Altes Schloss"), part of which was preserved in later reconstructions, and, by order of Duke Leopold III, the castle in Wiener Neustadt. Between 1379 and 1395 the ground floors of the south tower of St. Stephen´s in Vienna were built according to his plans. One of his last works was probably the planning of the "Langhaus" (nave and aisle) of the Maria am Gestade Church (before 1397).
