Meister des Albrechtsaltars auch Albrechtsmeister#

Meister des Albrechtsaltars (also: Albrechtsmeister), painter, worked in the second quarter of the 15th century at court in Vienna. Main representative of the energetic, realistic style of Viennese painting in the mid-15th century; named after the former high altar at the White Carmelite church in Vienna's first district (Am Hof); the altar is now kept at Klosterneuburg monastery. It contains remarkably modern elements and was donated before 1437 by O. Oberndorffer, land adminstrator of Albrecht II, d. 1439. Other important works are a Lady altar from around 1438, parts of which are kept in Vienna, Berlin and Budapest, and the epitaph of Johannes Geus, cathedral canon in Vienna (d. 1440; the epitaph is kept in the Cathedral and Diocesan Museum in Vienna). The artist's works are remarkable for their detailed landscapes and atmospheric nature scenes. His panel of the Golden Gate (Tafel der Goldenen Pforte; Oesterreichische Galerie Belvedere) is the first picture of medieval Vienna.
