Meister von Mondsee#
Meister von Mondsee, painter, worked in Salzburg in the late 15th century; was probably apprenticed in Vienna, his style is reminiscent of that of the Master of the Schottenaltar in Vienna. He is named after an altar for the monastery at Mondsee commissioned by Abbot Benedikt Eck von Piburg (the altar was consecrated in 1497; parts of it are kept at the Oesterreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna and in the Liechtenstein collections at Vaduz). The artist still painted on a golden background; his endearingly realistic details are reminiscent of Dutch painting.
