Meister von Schloss Lichtenstein#

Meister of Schloss Lichtenstein, painter, probably worked in Vienna around 1440/50. Represents the realistic style strongly influenced by Dutch painting that prevailed in the mid-15th century. He is named after two large pictures of scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary (Death of the Virgin, Coronation of the Virgin, around 1440/50) at Lichtenstein castle in Wuerttemberg. Fourteen other panels with scenes from the life of the Virgin have been preserved, as well as one with scenes from the life of Jesus (around 1445; the panels are kept at museums in Vienna, Philadelphia, Moscow and Warsaw). 7 panels of a Passion cycle (around 1440/45) have also been preserved (at collections at Esztergom, Basle, Augsburg and Munich). The works ascribed to the master were, however, created by a number of artists within one workshop.
