Michael, Heiliger#
Michael, Saint, feast day September 29, archangel. Was personified as a war hero and dragon slayer in the Last Judgement and Corpus Christi plays well into the Baroque period. According to popular belief, his day (Michaelmas Day) was one of the days on which the weather is considered to be crucial in determining the coming season or which are considered favourable or unfavourable for doing certain kinds of work; e.g. fairs (in the Lungau region, province of Salzburg, and in St. Veit, province of Carinthia); harvesting customs were held according to this day and "Michaelsminne" and "Michaelsbrot" (special kind of bread), etc. are customs attached to it. In Vienna the St. Michael Brotherhood was founded in 1860 to support papal concerns.
