Militärgeographisches Institut#
Military Geography, Institute of (Militaergeographisches Institut), Vienna, was formed in 1839 by the union of the Milan Geographic Institute, founded 1814, and the Vienna Topographic Institute of the k. k. General Staff Quartermaster (k. k. General-Quartiermeisterstab), established in 1806; considerably contributed to the development of Austrian Cartography. During the 1st Republic it was turned into the "Cartographic Institute", which was the forerunner of the present-day "Landesaufnahme" (Land Survey) department in the Federal Office of Weights, Measures and Surveying.
