Missionary Associations and Mission Houses: In 1829 the first Austrian missionary society, the "Leopoldinenstiftung" ("Leopold Foundation"), was established to support the Catholic mission in America (dissolved before World War I). The St. Peter Claver Sodality, founded by Countess M. T. Ledóchowska in Salzburg, is a welfare organization for the African mission. The Vienna mission society "Koenigin der Apostel" ("Queen of the Apostles") and its affiliated congregation of sisters work in Chunar near Benares in India. Various organisations of the Catholic Action of Austria also make financial contributions, e.g. epiphany carol singing events of the Jungschar Catholic youth movement, family fast days of the Catholic women's movement, "Bruder in Not" ("Brother in Need") project of the Catholic men's movement. The MIVA (Mission Transportation Working Group) provides vehicles for missionary work. Mission houses are mainly run by Missionary Orders. The national administration of the Papal missionary societies in Vienna ("Missio Austria") and its diocesan offices support missionary societies by granting financial aid, doing educational work, providing information or by organizing solidarity projects.
