Mittelschulen#
Mittelschulen ("middle schools", type of secondary school), since the 2nd half of the 19th century, term used for a school type which developed at the same time as the Gymnasium and, being structured in a similar way, leads beyond compulsory education ( Realschule, girls' lyceum, Realgymnasium, and Handels-Mittelschule, commercial secondary school), since the School Legislation of 1962 called "allgemeinbildende hoehere Schulen" ("AHS") or general secondary schools of "higher" education (i.e. selective secondary schools with academic curriculum) and "berufsbildende hoehere Schulen" ("BHS"), vocational secondary schools of "higher" education. Since 1962 the term "mittlere Schulen" or "middle" schools, has been used for secondary schools ( Fachschulen) which do not grant certificates giving access to university studies.
