David, came to Austria in the 1790s, at court was employed only on festive occasions because of his former republican connections. M. was however engaged by the Esterházy family to design the palace in Eisenstadt (left uncompleted in 1805) and the church and mausoleum in Nagyganna (Hungary), 1818. In search of a balance between splendour and rationalism, M. played a major role in introducing French architectural styles and strongly influenced the architecture of Vormaerz (period before the March revolution of 1848).
